The Scalable I/O Initiative involves people who work in different disciplines and who are located at over thirty institutions. Management and coordination of the technical activities of this diverse and geographically-separated collaboration requires devoting considerable attention to the task and using effective communication tools. Fortunately, there are successful models to follow, such as the Center for Research on Parallel Computation and the Concurrent Supercomputing Consortium, and many members of the SIO Initiative have been actively involved in such efforts and in projects that resulted in widely-used software developed collaboratively (e.g. EISPACK and LINPACK).

The technical activities are organized into Working Groups

Applications,
Performance Evaluation,
Compilers and Languages,
Operating and File Systems, and
Integration and Testbeds

whose leaders coordinate technical activities.

Ad hoc Task Forces will be introduced to ensure topics related to several Working Groups are adequately addressed.

A Technical Committee, again including the Leaders of the Working Groups, will provide technical leadership and coordination across Working Groups.

An Executive Committee, including the Leaders of the Working Groups, will make key management decisions.

An Interagency Steering Committee provides reporting to and review by the sponsoring agencies.

Communications among the participants will be facilitated through extensive use of electronic and video-conferencing tools, plus workshops and project meetings.
