Challenges for Scientific(and Information) Visualization
Speed, speed, speed…to operate on human time scale: requires new h/w, data handling to cope w/ terabyte to petabyte data
- caching, staging
- after displays reach limits of human visual BW, need “semantic compression” techniques such as: segmentation, culling, feature extraction, summarizing, automatic generation of dataset comparisons, etc.
New visual representations (both for sci and info viz)
- multi-dimensional data
- multi-resolution reps; global overview plus local details, e.g., LIC
- representation of computational and measurement errors
- both realistic and schematic/illustrative (but beware of artifacts…)
