Getting a CACR Account

Forms:
User Account Request Form
Project Request Form

Add Users to Project Request Form
Add Resource to Project Request Form

Who can get an account at CACR?

Accounts at the Caltech Center for Advanced Computing Research exist for the purpose of assisting with and performing scientific research consistent with our mission. Specifically, the Director of CACR (or an authorized designate) approves the use of specific resources for a particular research project. Users working on that project are then given accounts at CACR and access to those resources.

I’m starting work on a valid project, how do I get my account?

  1. Read our Computing Policy.
  2. Fill out the User Account Form.
  3. Have your Project Leader fill out an Add User to Project request.
  4. Send the forms to us.

What is a “Project”?

The word ‘project’ in this document will refer to a specific course of research that has completed a Project Request Form, and been approved by the Director.

I’m a project leader. How do I get accounts for my collaborators/grad students?

Have them fill out User Account Forms, and send them in. Then fill out an Add Users to Project request, and send it to us. You can also list the names/usernames of your initial project members on the project request form in place of the ‘Add Users Form’.

I already have an account, but am going to start working on another project as well. What do I do?

You should have the new Project Leader fill out an Add Users to Project request with his projectID and your username. Your account will then be granted access to any additional resources associated with the new project.

I don’t understand the form. What does it mean by…?

The people at cacr-account-request at cacr.caltech.edu will be happy to help answer any questions you may have about the forms. If you aren’t sure how to fill something out, please ask us.

  • a URL, http://www.cacr.caltech.edu/projects/ projectname , for project-maintained web pages and information (usually linked to the “public_html” directory in the project space).
  • user accounts for all project members.

What basic resources does a user account get?

Every user account that is part of an active project will be provided with the following resources:

  • a 40MB home directory, backed up regularly.
  • an e-mail address (username@cacr.caltech.edu); mail sent to that address will be delivered to whatever address we have on file for you: for CACR staff, this will be your CACR mailbox; and for others, it will be the address which you specify on your user account form.
  • an accounts on all login.cacr.caltech.edu.
