1997 marks the third year of existence on Lambda Kappa Kappa. It is hard not to be proud of how much has been accomplished in such little time. And yet so much more needs be done.
So what have we accomplished? Through three presidencies we have been able to stablish an image that trascends the boundaries of TCU. We have been able to inspire incoming freshman into participating in TCU and the community through us. We have made Lambda Kapps a name most official heads of TCU have heard of.
But we have also learnt that getting stuff done is not easy. Organizing, even a small group of people is a hard task. Trying to balance our requirements with those of the individual have become an argument of organization versus individual. If we require our people to attend a certain appointment, we may loose those who have no time to spare. If we do not, our presence becomes feeble and goes unrecognized.
And even reaching our own people does not come easy. Encouraging new students to join an organization they know little or nothing about is a hard task. How to reach them? letters? flyers? word to mouth? Experience in this kind of matters is the only thing that is going to get us through and beyond time.
Success is our main goal. We are bulding strong men in a more solid communty hopefully through our work. Else we are failing.
But failure is around the corner. Time flies, and lack of organization and of effort drives to scatterd work. Lack of unity and communtication leads to ignorance and sickness within the community. Wellbeing lies with in knowledge of ourselves, our brother next to us, and that which lies outside.
Hard work must come from every single member. Hard work towards the ornization, towards the comunnity, and more important, oneself. And at the same time, eyes must be open, and arms willing to pick up a fallend down brother. You must be ready to put your mind and soul into working, and sharing your drive with those less encouraged. Rememeber, working for the community, for the organization, and working on yourself as a man and a student are not exclusive. They are in fact one. And that is our purpose.
I must congratulate all those who have been officers and members of our humble fraternity in the last three years. I personaly appreciate your work as if you have saved the life of one of my children. I am proud of you as my own brother who has accomplished an enormous goal. Now the challenge lies in compiling all this work, building upon it, and growing.
I will not prietch, if I have not already. I am but a reliq of the past. My life has me in limbo. Yet I proudly wear my letters when possible. I carry my pledge card with me. I has become me. It has become my presentation card. My hope, one day a young man will come to me to interview for a job, and what will I find, but that he is a brother. That he stands for what we all stand for.
Que pasa hermanos? Due to my overwhelming schedule i had to regretably resign my position as Public Relations Chair. So after some shifting around, new chairs and officers were elected. I dont know if you have heard , but Micah resigned as Vice President for personal reasons, which we respect, and still offer him all our support as a friend. So the President remains Jaime, Vice President was elected Brent Lindenman ("Pan Blanco.") He has shown lots of enthusiasm and is doing great job so far. Our Public Relations Chair is now Alvaro Sauceda ("Primo.") Antonio had to resign his community chair as well because of his schedule, so our new community chair is Rudy Mendoza. Both Alvaro and Rudy are 4th Generation Lambdas. We have changed the cultural chair back to its original name: THE SILVERIO CHAIR, and of course "nada mas y nada menos que" Silverio Ramirez is holding that position. We have added an academic chair and Rolando DeLuna is that chair. We have also added an Interfraternity Chair which is Elio Elizondo. This chair keeps us informed what is going on with the other chapters.
Now to tell you how much we have grown. We are being recognized in Denton: a lot. So much that, remember that sign that I told you about? The one our Brothers from the Gamma chapter made? Well, apparently someone in Denton feels threatened by our Lambda Brothers (they know we are the...), because they decided to steal the sign. How do you like that?
Jealous of LKK! Even though that sucks, it shows us that we are known. Not in the way we want to be know, for we are not about making rivals, we are about uniting the community, but i guess there are some people out there that dont realize that. Anyhow, our brothers from North Texas are doing a great job. Currently they are working on their next pledge class for this semester.
Now for the Texas Wesleyan chapter, my hat goes off to Manuel Espinoza , the president of TWU. So far he has shown much enthusiasm and effort into becoming a Lambda Kapp. He is working very hard to accomplish that. And soon that will happen.
Finally, I want to congratulate our newest alumni: Salvador Carrillo, who graduated May of 1996, and Bernee Garcia, graduated in December of 1996. Congratulations Guys!
So that is all for now from the Hjalmar Corner.. Hasta la proxima.
Latin America: an overdue war
Ecuador: Prices of public services shoot up 300% in one week. The President dictates to the press on what and what not to print. Socio-political, economic, and "moral" reforms are done on the the name of the people.
Mexico: After a much reported uprise of indigenous in Chiapas, the gobernment breaks the contract with the people and new collisions are expected.
Peru: The on-going guerilla war takes center stage when the Tupac Camaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) takes over 200 hostages in the Japanese embassy in Lima. Meanwhile, the pre-dominant guerilla movement, Sendero Luminoso, jealous of the attention given to the MRTA siege, makes a public demonstration in a smaller town, killing over ten people in cold blood in front of all people in the town.
In Ecuador, a protest leaded by the Mayor of the Capital, and a group of ex-presidents uprose, and demanded the impeachment of the president. A petition directed towards the president of Mexico is currently circulating the world, asking him to respect the rights of the Mexican people. In Peru, the army builds up. The chance of Fujimori starting another war agains Ecuador to raise his popularity, seem very plausible. After all, who would blame him for starting a war in this situation?
Our role? Bye-standers? It is time to raise our voice. It does not take more than writing a letter or standing on a crate and screaming the truth! We must do something! Latin America, our people, are evolving at their own pace, and forging new routs towards a political system which truly represents them. North American capitalism reflects the "American" cultures, its ideals, and its people. Latin America inherited feudalism from the Spanish, capitalism came from its irradiant neighbor to the north, and the ideals of socialism and Marxism easily spread across the Atlantic, finding harbor in Cuba. So who are we? What systems is truly best for "us"? Remember Bolivar. He died for us, not Marx, not Washington, not Colon! From Montezuma to Atahualpa, Bolivar to Marti, there stand our forefathers and our future!
Starting a New Year
Nineteen ninety seven is the magic number! Believe me people when I say that this will be dawn of our renaissance! We have been confided a task that few choose to accept. But accepting in its own is not good enough. It is time to act upon it!
Look around you and analyze what is wrong. Look inside yourself and search for what you can do about it. We, the select ones, have a mission to accomplish. From recruiting to service it must all be done to best of our abilities, and sparing no sacrifice. If out of one hundred fliers, only one is read, it is worth it. If out if one hundred calls, one person listened, it is worth it. And not only worth it, but necessary.
I do not mean to complain, but we as leaders, have always looked for the simplest ways to accomplish out goals. And the fact is that there is no "Cliff-Notes" to organization success. Every little bit helps, every little bit is necessary. One must build upon experience, and not dismiss the old for the new, but expand upon. Is anyone following me?
Yes, I am no one to speak, but it is time to get our act together and work towards that dream that seems to be more of a flyer that one gets on the street only to throw it into one of those clown trash cans, rather than a motto or a constitution that we should be swearing by and guiding us through our crusade like excallibur to King Arthur.
We are the Quijotes of 1997. But, given enough of us and given enough effort, we can unveil those damn wind- mills for the monsters they are, and then we can kick their sorry little... well you get the idea. Prosper new year to all of you!
Last semester the new North Texas officers were initiated. A congratulations is in order for taking such an important step for them and the cause!
Furthermore, I wanted to point out that those guys made a BAD ASS LKK sign. They got a maybe 6' x 3' sheet of plywood and nailed the LKK greek letters across it diagonally. It is a double sided one you know It looks like a triangle without the bottom. So congratulations to all the University of North Texas Officers for completing their journey to knighthood, you are highly motivated and thus great leaders.
I will get back to you with some names. From the Hjalmar Corner.... Later...
